Year 4

At Nightingale Primary School, our Year 4 curriculum is designed to deepen pupils’ thinking, creativity and independence. This term, our learning is inspired by the powerful text The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo, which provides rich opportunities for reflection, discussion and high-quality writing.

In English, pupils will explore themes of loss, love and transformation through The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. Through structured talk, modelling and independent writing, children will develop their skills through:

• Writing a Message in a Bottle

• Creating a diary entry from a character’s perspective

• Writing an alternative ending to the story

A strong focus will be placed on grammar and accuracy, including:

• Correct use of pronouns

• Applying the possessive apostrophe and using apostrophes accurately

• Understanding and using homophones correctly

In Maths, pupils will build fluency and reasoning across key areas:

• Working with money, including solving real-life problems

• Measuring and comparing mass, volume and length

• Finding the area of different figures

Children will continue to explain their thinking and apply their knowledge to a range of problem-solving contexts.

In Science, pupils will study states of matter, exploring solids, liquids and gases. They will investigate how materials change state and develop their understanding through practical enquiry and observation.

• History: Pupils will learn about the Vikings, exploring who they were, how they lived and their impact on Britain

• Religious Education: Children will continue their learning about Sikhism, focusing on Sikh teachings and how they influence daily life

Creativity remains central to our curriculum:

• Design and Technology: Exploring textiles through designing and creating Edward Tulane puppets

• Art: Developing descriptive skills by responding to and describing Miro-style pictures

• Music: Creating simple melodies together, developing rhythm, pitch and collaboration

In Computing, pupils will focus on programming for a purpose. They will learn how to:

• Design and create simple programs

• Debug and extend existing programs

• Understand how coding can be used to solve problems

In PE, children will develop their skills in tennis, focusing on control, coordination and gameplay. They will also engage in problem-solving activities, building teamwork and resilience.

Through PSHE, pupils will continue to explore relationships, developing their understanding of respect, communication and cooperation within a community.
