Geography

At Nightingale Primary School, our Year 1 curriculum builds strong foundations while nurturing curiosity, creativity and confidence. Through carefully planned, connected learning experiences, children develop key skills across all areas of the curriculum.

This term, our English learning is centred around The Bee Who Spoke. Children will explore the story through discussion and oral rehearsal before developing their writing. They will create simple setting descriptions inspired by countryside and city environments, and write short journal entries to express their ideas.

Phonics remains a key priority in Year 1. Pupils will consolidate Phase 5 sounds and apply their knowledge in reading and writing. Regular review sessions will support children in preparation for the Phonics Screening Check, ensuring they are confident and fluent readers.

In Maths, children will build fluency and understanding through practical and engaging learning. Key areas of focus include:

• Multiplication and division through grouping and sharing

• Introduction to fractions

• Understanding and telling the time

Learning is supported through concrete resources, talk, and reasoning to help children explain their thinking with confidence.

Our wider curriculum provides meaningful opportunities for children to explore the world around them:

• Geography: Developing locational knowledge and understanding seasonal changes across the year

• Educational Visit: A trip to Woodlands Farm to enrich learning about nature and the environment

• Computing: Introduction to algorithms and early coding using Busythings

• Design and Technology: Creating a moving picture book using simple mechanisms

These experiences help children make connections and deepen their understanding beyond the classroom.

Children will explore their creativity and physical development through:

• Music: Learning and performing songs linked to the environment

• PE: Developing teamwork, coordination and confidence through striking and fielding games

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is central to our curriculum. Through the topic Who am I?, children will explore identity, belonging and relationships. They will learn how to express themselves, understand others and develop positive relationships within the school community.
